Pandas in Chengdu

The Chinese province Sichuan is home of the Giant Panda. There are some Nature Reserves you can visit, but the easiest way to see them outside of a zoo is in Chengdu. The “Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding” is situated in the north of Chengdu.

It is not really a wildlife resort but different to the usual air-conditioned houses used in zoos, the Pandas here can stroll around in relatively big compounds. Plus there are not only one or two of them but dozens. While the Giant Pandas are separated from the visitors the Red Pandas can stroll around more freely and use the walkways of the visitors.

I highly recommend to be there early and not to miss the feeding as this is the part of the day the pandas are active, later you might find them only laying around sleeping. The park opens at 7:30 and feeding starts at 8:00, so 8:30 is the time you should be there latest. You can reach the park by public transportation, but that might be not so easy in the morning. So better take a taxi.

Dies ist zwar kein Wildpark aber im Gegensatz zu den klimatisierten Gebäuden in den die Tiere in den Zoos gehalten werden, halten sie sich hier in relativ großen Gehegen auf. Außerdem gibt es hier nicht nur ein oder zwei, sondern Dutzende. Während der Große Panda in abgetrennten Gehegen gehalten wird, haben die kleineren Roten Panda die Möglichkeit sich auch unter die Besucher zu mischen und deren Wege zu nutzen.

Ich empfehle dringend zeitig dort zu sein und die Fütterung nicht zu verpassen. Dies ist die Tageszeit in der die Pandas aktiv sind, später findet man sie wahrscheinlich nur noch schlafend vor. Der Park öffnet um 7:30 Uhr und die Fütterung beginnt um 8:00 Uhr, sodass man spätestens um 8:30 Uhr dort sein sollte. Man kann den Park zwar auch mit öffentlichen Verkehrmitteln erreichen, aber früh am Morgen ist dies u.U. nicht ganz so einfach, sodass sich ein Taxi rentiert.

National Centre for the Performing Arts - Beijing / Chinesische Nationaloper - Peking

With our planned trip to China later in autumn you will see quite some pictures from there over the next months. To give you some ideas on what to expect, I’ll show you some pictures from I took during the last years.

China changed significantly during the last two decades and architecture is the area you can recognize it easily. Aside of old (or rebuilt) temples you can find boring, purely functional houses or world-class architecture.

This for example is the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing. Designed by Paul Andreu it is right next to some monumental communistic buildings and not far away from the Forbidden City. During daytime it’s not the most fascinating building especially as the surroundings (and often the weather) is not supportive. But as soon as it gets dark the magic starts …

China hat sich in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten deutlich gewandelt und Architektur ist einer der Bereiche in der dies sehr deutlich wird. Neben alten (oder wieder aufgebauten) Tempeln, findet man langweilige, rein funktionale Häuser oder aber weltklasse Architektur.

Dies hier zum Beispiel ist die Oper Pekings. Entworfen von Paul Andreu befindet sie sich direkt neben kommunistischen Monumentalbauten und in der Nachbarschaft der verbotenen Stadt. Tagsüber ist es nicht wirklich das faszinierendste Gebäude, gerade weil die Umgebung (und oftmals das Wetter) nicht wirklich förderlich ist. Aber sobald es dunkel wird, wird es faszinierend …

Lake Garda / Gardasee

Last autumn we spent a long weekend at Lake Garda. Lake Garda is one of the main tourist spots in northern Italy, so you better avoid the peak seasons in spring and summer. In mid September kids are back in school and usually the weather is still fine. Now you have a better chance to enjoy the scenery.

We stayed near Malcesine, one of the most beautiful villages around the lake. There are nice walkways along the shore and although the weather was quite unstable, I managed to get a nice shot during the blue hour.

Wir haben nahe Malcesine übernachtet, eines der schönsten Dörfer am See. Es gibt nette Wege entlang des Ufers und obwohl das Wetter recht wechselhaft war, hatte ich während der Blauen Stunde die Gelegenheit zu diesem Bild.

Cesar Manrique: Jardin de Cactus (Cactus Garden) - Lanzarote / Cesar Manrique: Kakteengarten Lanzarote

But aside of sculptures and buildings Cesar Manrique also created a beautiful cactus garden near the village of Guatiza. On an area of 5000 square meter you can find more than 1400 different species from all over the world. The chance that at least some of them are in bloom is not so bad.

Neben Skulpturen und Gebäude hat Cesar Manrique aber auch einen wunderschönen Kateengarten nahe dem Dorf Guatiza geschaffen. Auf 5000 Quadratmetern finden sich mehr als 1400 Kakteenarten aus der ganzen Welt. Die Chancen, dass zumindest einige blühen stehen nicht schlecht.

Cueva de los Verdes - Lanzarote

There are not so many tourist spots on Lanzarote and most people prefer to stay at the beach anyhow. But it’s worthwhile to rent a car for a day or two and take a look around. Beside the legacy of Cesar Manrique and the Timanfaya National Park, Cueva de los Verdes was one of the places we visited last autumn.

Cueva de los Verdes is a huge lava tube that is partly accessible to the public. Unfortunately you have to join a group and I was already wondering if I should return the tripod to the car - luckily I didn’t. The guide talked quite a lot and didn’t really care if everybody was near him. So it was quite easy to stay behind or even walk ahead. I’m not sure if every guide is that relaxed and how it looks like if it is high season. But give it a try.

Auf Lanzarote gibt es nicht so viele Sehenswürdigkeiten und die meisten Touristen bleiben ohnehin an den Stränden. Dennoch lohnt es sich für einen oder zwei Tage einen Wagen zu mieten und sich ein wenig umzusehen. Neben den Hinterlassenschaften von Cesar Manrique und dem Timanfaya Nationalpark war die Cueva de los Verdes eines der Ziele die wir letzten Herbst besuchten.

Cueva de los Verdes ist eine große Lava-Höhle, die teilweise öffentlich zugänglich ist. Dummerweise muss man an einer Gruppenführung teilnehmen und ich war schon am überlegen ob ich nicht das Stativ wieder zum Auto zurückbringe. Glücklicherweise habe ich das nicht gemacht. Der Führer hat viel geredet und es war ihm auch nicht wirklich wichtig, dass alle brav in seiner Nähe bleiben. So war es dann auch einfach etwas zurückzubleiben oder sogar vorneweg zu gehen. Keine Ahnung ob alle Führer so relaxed sind bzw. wie es in der Hauptsaison aussieht. Ein Versuch ist es allemal wert.

Spring in the Eastern U.S. / Frühling im Osten der USA

This time it was to be the North East of America. Freya wanted to go to New York and Niagara Falls - definitely not again to "Juergens red stones".

Two weeks before departure Juergen looked for the weather: It’s snowing in Niagara! Snow we had more than enough this year. So we decided to go from New York down to the south. Not a big deal as, except for the hotel in New York, nothing is booked. We just have to figure out where we want to go and what we want to see. In principle, it ought to go to the south along the coast down to Savannah, then west to the Appalachian Mountains and back to the north.

Zwei Wochen vor Abflug schaut Jürgen nach dem Wetter: In Niagara schneit es! Davon hatten wir die-ses Jahr nun wirklich mehr als genug. Dann fahren wir halt von New York aus in den Süden. Gut, dass außer dem ersten Hotel noch nichts gebucht ist. Nur die Frage, was wir uns wo ansehen wollen, müssen wir jetzt auf die Schnelle klären. Im Prinzip soll es von New York aus die Küste entlang nach Süden bis nach Savannah gehen. Dann nach Westen bis zu den Appalachen und dann wieder zurück nach Norden.

Bolivia, Chile and Easter Island 2012-2013 / Bolivien, Chile und die Osterinsel 2012-2013

Juergen has wanted a trip to Easter Island. Regarding the arrival one is quite limited there - from Europe only Santiago de Chile really makes sense. But we’ve never been in Chile before – so why not?

Juergen would have preferred a four weeks trip so it’s worth the long arrival. First, we wanted to go from north to south, but quickly we realized that even 4 weeks are not good enough for that. So Patagonia stays on our waiting list.

Just by chance Juergen found a trip including not only the Easter Island and northern Chile but also southern Bolivia. We'll take it!

Am liebsten wäre er 4 Wochen verreist, damit sich der lange Weg auch lohnt. Erst wollten wir einmal von Nord nach Süd, aber relativ schnell wurde klar, dass sich das selbst mit 4 Wochen nicht wirklich ausgeht. Also bleibt Patagonien auf der Warteliste stehen.

Eher zufällig stolpert Jürgen dann über eine Djoser-Reise die neben der Osterinsel und Nord-Chile auch Süd-Bolivien beinhaltet. Das nehmen wir!
