Peterson Air Force Base - Colorado Springs
As we decided not to translate our travelogues into English, I promised to post some background information to featured pictures from time to time. This one is from our visit to the US in 2011:
Near Colorado Springs, at exit 156 B of the I-25, we want to take a look at the Cadet Chapel of the Air Force Academy. The Chapel is inside a military area and so the guard wants to take a look in the trunk, but the thing he is interested most is that you have a driver's license.
The church is a modern concrete building with seventeen spires reminding one of rising Starfighters. More than once, Freya has been thinking about the symbolism of the 17 spires, until she read that originally more spires were planned, but had to be reduced to 17 due to cost reasons.
The building houses separate rooms for different religions. On the first floor is the largest vestry, a Protestant church. On the floor below is a smaller Catholic church and via a separate entrance you can reach a Jewish, a Buddhist, and a common room.
From the outside, the church looks rather cool and very modern. But as soon as you enter the upper floor the room is lit in a variety of diffuse blue, resulting from countless blue glass panels, which are accompanied by different colored panes in all imaginable colors. Wonderful. We enjoy the atmosphere of the room and spend quite some time here.
The light in the Catholic area is rather reddish due to the panes used and in the synagogue the dominating color is purple. The Buddhist space, however, is kept very simple.
Near to the church you can also take a look at the Visitor Center. But interestingly this is more about the Falcons, the local football team, than the Air Force.

Als wir beschlossen haben unsere Reiseberichte nicht ins Englische zu übersetzen, versprach ich ab und an hier einige Ausschnitte zu präsentieren. Dieser ist aus unseren Bericht „Rusty Roads – USA 2011):
Kurz vor Colorado Springs, bei der Ausfahrt 156 B wollen wir uns die Cadet Chapel der Air Force Academy angucken. Die befindet sich auf Militärgelände und der Posten wollte sogar in den Kofferraum schauen, am meisten hat ihn aber interessiert, dass man einen Führerschein hat.
Die Kirche ist ein moderner Betonbau mit siebzehn Spitzen, bei denen man an aufsteigende Starfighter denkt. Mehr als einmal hat Freya über die Symbolik der 17 Spitzen nachgedacht, bis sie dann in einem Bericht gelesen hat, dass ursprünglich sogar noch mehr Spitzen geplant waren, man aber aus Kostengründen auf die 17 reduziert hat. Aber das nur am Rande.
Das Gebäude beherbergt Räumlichkeiten für mehrere Religionen. Im ersten Stock ist der größte Andachtsraum, eine protestantische Kirche. Im Stockwerk darunter gibt es dann noch eine kleinere katholische Kirche und über einen separaten Eingang erreichbar einen jüdischen, einen buddhistischen, sowie einen allgemeinen Raum.
Von außen sieht die Kirche eher kühl und sehr modern aus. Betritt man aber das obere Stockwerk leuchtet der Raum in einem diffusen Blau, das von unzähligen blauen Glasscheiben herrührt, die von andersfarbigen Scheiben in allen erdenklichen Farben begleitet werden. Wunderbar. Wir lassen uns von der Atmosphäre des Raumes gefangen nehmen und verbringen hier einige Zeit.
Der katholische Raum leuchtet durch die verwendeten Scheiben eher rötlich, während in der Synagoge der Farbton violett vorherrscht. Der Buddhistische Raum hingegen ist ganz schlicht gehalten.
Neben der Kirche kann man auch noch ein Visitor Center ansehen. In diesem geht es interessanter Weise mehr um die Falcons, das lokale Football-Team, als um die Air Force.
